SITES Water – Layer 6, Greenhouse Gas Flux Program – Lake methane and dissolved inorganic carbon concentration

Collection

Collection of methane (CH4) and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) concentration data as part of the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Flux Program from five lakes (stations), i.e. Almbergasjön (Abisko), Erken (Erken), Erssjön (Skogaryd), Feresjön (Asa) and Stortjärn (Svartberget), linked to the Thematic Program SITES Water, which has been running since 2016.

The GHG Flux Program is run during the open water season with a bi-weekly sampling cycle of 1-2 days. Surface water CH4 and DIC concentration is measured at the start (day 0) and at the end of the 1-2 days and taken from the floating chamber locations, which are placed on the lake in three different transects starting from the shore and extending towards the lake center, thus, covering different depth gradients per transect: 0-2 m, 2-4 m, and in some of the lakes > 4 m, in total 12 chambers per lake and deployment period.
