General description: The run-off scenario mesocosm experiment was set-up 5 times in a total in three lakes: in Bolmen and Erken in summer 2022 and in Bolmen, Erken and Erssjön in spring 2023. The experiments used the SITES AquaNet mesocosm infrastructure connected to three of the constituent research stations (Bolmen, Erken, Skogaryd; all located in Sweden). All experiments lasted for a total of 37 days. Protocol 2: To simulate the inflow of allochthonous, coloured dissolved organic matter (cDOM) into freshwater ecosystems through heavy rainfall events, terrigenous DOM was extracted from peat soil using alkaline extraction and added to each mesocosms to achieve a total addition of 2 mg DOC L-1. An addition of 2 mg L-1 DOC marks the difference between the 5 % and 95% percentiles of DOC concentrations measured in Erken since 2016 when DOC concentrations started to be recorded. At the same time the peat extract served as a browning agent.
